The State of Illinois is one of the most institutionalized states in the United States and is ranked 47th in the country for community inclusion (United Cerebral Palsy Association, 2016). In this environment, there is a desperate need for alternative housing options among people living with developmental disabilities (DD) and their families.
Supportive housing integrates a housing subsidy with wrap-around services, providing individuals with IDD independent housing integrated into the community, so people with disabilities have a life like any other. It is a relatively inexpensive intervention that uses affordable, stable housing as a platform for the individualized, person-centered support each person needs, to be successful in their own home. People living in supportive housing live alone, or with someone they choose.
Through the Supportive Housing Transition Fund, Illinois Housing Navigators provide supports and services to people with Developmental Disabilities who are seeking Supportive Housing options. ICDD will implement a systems change demonstration project to create a replicable services and housing coordination model that results in more people with DD having access to supportive housing. The goal is to replicate this program as a permanent service at the completion of the project.
